Koh Samui area guide: where to buy

The areas of Koh Samui where new developments are being built: what each one is like and what stands out about it. Every area links to the projects for sale there.

Hillside and beachfront pool villas and a small number of low-rise condominiums, from the island's established developers.

Bang Por

The quiet western end of the north coast, facing Koh Phangan.

Bang Por is the stretch of north coast west of Mae Nam. It has drawn several new villa projects, both on the beach and on the hillside behind it, and stays noticeably calmer than the island's east coast.

  • Sea views towards Koh Phangan
  • Beachfront and hillside villa projects
  • Calmer than the east coast

Chaweng

The island's busiest beach and the sea-view hillsides above it.

Chaweng is Koh Samui's main beach town, with the island's largest choice of restaurants, shops and nightlife. New building is mostly sea-view pool villas on the hills of Chaweng Noi, plus a few low-rise condominiums on the flat land behind the beach.

  • Closest to shops, dining and nightlife
  • Sea-view villas on the Chaweng Noi hills
  • Low-rise condominiums behind the beach

Bophut

The north-coast bay around Fisherman's Village.

Bophut combines a walkable beachfront village with hillside land behind the ring road. It offers both villa projects and low-rise condominiums, within easy reach of Chaweng and the airport.

  • Fisherman's Village dining and walking street
  • Villas and low-rise condominiums
  • Central for Chaweng and the airport

Plai Laem & Choeng Mon

The north-east headland: sheltered bays and hillside sea views near the airport.

The north-eastern tip of the island runs from Bang Rak and the Big Buddha round to the sheltered beach at Choeng Mon. Villa projects climb the headland for sea views, and the flat land near Bang Rak holds one of the island's largest condominium projects.

  • Sea-view villas on the headland
  • Sheltered beach at Choeng Mon
  • Minutes from the airport

Mae Nam

A long, quiet north-coast beach with views across to Koh Phangan.

Mae Nam is a low-key north-coast village with a long beach and hills behind it. New villas here are generally priced below the Chaweng and Bophut hillsides.

  • Long, quiet beach
  • Hillside villas with views to Koh Phangan
  • Lower prices than the north-east

Lamai

The island's second beach town, on the south-east coast.

Lamai is smaller and more relaxed than Chaweng, with its own beach, restaurants and markets. It has the island's largest number of new villa projects outside the north-east, many of them at lower prices.

  • A beach town with its own centre
  • Many new villa projects
  • Prices below Chaweng and Bophut

South & West Coast

Lipa Noi, Taling Ngam, Nathon and the island's quiet southern shore.

The south and west of Koh Samui are the least developed parts of the island: sunset beaches, coconut groves and the ferry port at Nathon. Only a small share of new projects is built here, mostly private estates and a few villa developments.

  • Sunset-facing beaches
  • The least built-up part of the island
  • Private estates and larger plots
